HOW DID KNUST COME ABOUT?

The University was established by government Ordinance on 6th October 1951 and was opened officially on 22nd January 1952 with 200 Teacher Training Students Transferred from Achimota to form the basis of the new college. It was initially called Kumasi College of Technology, and then later became the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology by an Act of Parliament.

How many halls are located at KNUST?

Currently, there are six halls of residence administered by a hall council consisting of senior and junior members. These are;

  • Unity Hall
  • Independence Hall
  • Republic Hall
  • University Hall
  • Africa Hall

The Largest Hall in KNUST

Currently, unity hall is the largest hall with an original accommodation capacity of 448 rooms with extra 36 flats. It is an all-male hall with modern facilities. Members in this Hall are known as “Continentals”

Which faculty is the biggest in KNUST?

The Social Sciences faculty building has a student capacity of 11,100 making it the biggest one in Africa.

KNUST fees are in two parts i.e., academic and hall fees. The fee for the academic session is ghc1,351.43. Also, fees for accommodation are as follows:

2.1GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING AN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

2.1.1Undergraduate Programmes duration

Most first-degree programmes of study are of Four (4) Years duration.

2.1.2Minimum/General Entry Requirements.

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the University must have CREDIT passes(A1-C6 in WASSCE and A–D inSSSCE) in the THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Core

Subjects(English Language,Mathematics,and Integrated Science),and CREDIT passesin THREEWASSCE/SSSCE ElectiveSubjects or its equivalent relevant to the chosenprogramme with aggregate24 or better.

**It is worth noting thatthe THREECore Subjectsare prerequisite for allProgrammesof study at ourUniversity.

B.GCE/IGCSE (CAMBRIDGE) ‘A’ & ‘O’LEVELS/MATURE APPLICANTSHolders of GCE/IGCSE must haveFIVEcredits at the ‘O’ Level includingEnglish Language

and Mathematics(or its approved equivalent), plus passes in at leastTHREE (3)subjects at the Advanced Level/Three Credits in the case of mature applicants.  In addition, the applicant mustfulfilthe appropriate Faculty or Departmental requirements.

GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (GBCE)/ ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)

ABCE and GBCE are both needed to qualify an applicant for a programme.

Holders of GBCEmust have passes inTHREECompulsory Subjects includingEnglish Languageand passes inTHREEElective Subjects including Business Mathematics.

HoldersABCE must have passes inTHREECompulsory Subjects plusTHREE (3)Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

Holders of InternationalBaccalaureate (IB)should have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level (HL) in Three (3) Subjects relevant to the Programme of choice and minimum

of grade 5 inChemistryfor Health and Allied Sciences. For Engineering, at least grade 5 at the Higher level(HL) inMathematics. In addition, one must have a minimum of grade 4 in English Language and Mathematicsat the Standard Level (SL) and at least grade C in a Sciencesubject at the IGCSE.

AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL GRADE 12

An applicant foradmission to a degree programme in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi must have a Final Grade Point of at least 3.0. For admission to the University School of Medicine and Dentistry, an applicant must have a Final Grade Point ofat least 3.25.Admissions will be to the Year 1.

2.1.3OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

(a)Ghanaian/Other Applicants with Foreign Results/Certificate

The University shall request an evaluation of results/Certificate other than those mentioned above, (a) to (f), from the Ghana Tertiary Commission (GTEC) and/or other International Credential Evaluation Agency to facilitate the determination of the suitability of the applicant for admission.

(b)Applicants from French Speaking Countries must provide a minimum ofone-yearEnglishProficiency Certificate.

(c)Documents not in English should be accompanied by accredited translations in English.(d)Transferof Applicants

Applicants from other universities (local and international) who are seeking admission to continue theirprogramme are required to submit official transcript, high school results and a cover letterthrough theDeputy Registrar, AcademicAffairs([email protected]),or the International Programmes Office ([email protected]) to the Head of Department. Proof of English proficiency and English translation of the transcript must be added where necessary.

Other Diploma holders with less than 70% as their CWA would be required to have three years’work experience in the real estate industry and in addition pass an interview to be admitted into first year of the Programme.

•Applicants must be Registered General Nurses with a Diploma in Nursing

BSc. MIDWIFERY (MATURE APPLICANTS FOR TOP-UP)

•Applicantsmust be at least 25 years of age at the time of theapplication.

•Applicants must satisfy the University’s General Requirements for Admission intodegreeprogrammes.

•Applicants mustbe aregistered Midwives with a Diploma in Midwifery

•Applicants must havea minimum ofTWO (2)years’working experience in aclinicalarea.

•Applicants in this category must pass an Interview.

BSc.PHYSIOTHERAPY AND SPORTS SCIENCE

•Applicants should be a least 25 years at the time of the application.

•Applicants must satisfy the general requirements for the programme (i.eWASSCE/SSSCE, OR ‘A’ Level). OR

•Candidates who have relevantDiploma certificatesin Sports and Exercise Science,Fitness Assessment, Physiotherapy and Orthotic Assistant, coaching etc. and whomust have worked for at least three (3) years will be considered for admission intoyeartwo.

•Applicantsmust be declared medically fit by the University Hospital and mustundergo a physical fitness assessment and must pass a written and/or oral interviewconducted at the Department.

A.DOCTOR OFVETERINARY MEDICINE(DVM)–DIPLOMA HOLDERSEntry Requirements

•A Diploma from Pong-Tamale Veterinary School orany other recognized VeterinaryTraining Institutions,

•Three (3) years relevant Post qualification working experience.

•All diploma holding applicants must also satisfy the minimum University entryrequirement for Admission.

•Applicants with BSc.Agriculture (Animal Science Option) or BSc. Biological Sciencesnot below 2ndClass lower division are eligible to apply for Admission. Such applicantswill be admitted directly into2ndyearof the Programme.

B.BSc. MIDWIFERY (Sandwich)Entry Requirements

•Applicants must satisfy the University’s General Requirements for Admission intoDegree Programmes.

•Must be registered Midwives with a Diploma in Midwifery

•Be at least 25 years of age at the time of submitting the application

•Must havea minimum ofTWO (2)years working experience in a clinical area

•Applicants in this category must pass an Interview.

•This Programme is taken during the Holidays.

BSc. NURSING (Emergency Option)

Entry Requirements

•Applicants must satisfy theUniversity’s General Requirements for the Admission toDegree Programmes.

E.Bachelor ofHerbal Medicine(BHM)Entry Requirements

•Applicants who are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) certified orequivalent from a recognized institution.

•Must havea minimum ofTHREE (3)years working experience may apply.

•Mustpass an interview.
