Duration of Study
The University of Cape Coast operates a standard four-year undergraduate degree programme for students who have successfully completed Senior High School education. Depending on the assessment and recognition of prior learning, qualified applicants may be admitted directly into the second year (Level 200) or third year (Level 300) of their programmes.
In addition, the University offers special programmes that may run for up to six years. Sub-degree programmes (Diplomas) may, depending on the mode of delivery, last between two and three years. Accordingly, the University offers the following programmes based on duration:
- Six- year degree programmes (180- 211 credits)
- Four-year degree programmes (120- 141 credits)
- Three-year degree programmes (90 – 106 credits)
- Two-year post-diploma degree programmes (60- 85 credits)
- Three-year diploma programmes (60- 85 credits)
- Two-year diploma programmes (60- 85 credits)
- One-year certificate programmes (30-36 credits)
Advance Credits for Prior Learning
Advance Credit is a bulk credit awarded to students admitted into Level 200 or Level 300 in recognition of their prior learning. Students admitted directly into Level 200 are awarded 30 credits, while those admitted into Level 300 are awarded 60 credits. These advance credits are not included in the computation of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.).
Students admitted into Level 200 normally commence their programmes with Level 200 courses and progress to higher levels. Similarly, students admitted into Level 300 begin with Level 300 courses and proceed to Level 400. However, Faculties/Schools and Departments may require such students to take additional make-up courses at lower levels where necessary.
Admission Requirements
Entry Routes
The University admits students through the following entry routes:
- Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE), Ghana
- West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
- Foreign qualifications that are internationally acceptable for admission into universities
- Mature Students’ Entrance Examination (entry at Level 100)
- Professional certificates and tertiary-level diplomas (entry at Level 200 or 300, subject to assessment of the qualification)

Post–Senior High School Candidates

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)
Applicants must have credit passes (A–D) in six (6) subjects with an overall aggregate score of 24 or better. Three (3) of the six subjects must be core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, and either Integrated Science or Social Studies. The remaining three (3) subjects must be elective subjects relevant to the applicant’s intended programme of study. In addition, applicants must satisfy any specific requirements prescribed by the relevant Faculty.

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Applicants must have credit passes (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects with an overall aggregate score of 36 or better. Three (3) of the subjects must be core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, and either Integrated Science or Social Studies. The remaining three (3) subjects must be elective subjects relevant to the applicant’s intended programme of study. Applicants must also meet any additional requirements specified by the relevant Faculty.Admission through the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination
Applicants must be at least twenty-five (25) years old by 31st December of the year preceding the examination. A certified copy of the applicant’s birth certificate is required, and the date of issue of the birth certificate must not be less than five (5) years prior to the completion of the admission forms.

Applicants must possess credit passes in English Language and Core Mathematics at the G.C.E. “O” Level or SSSCE/WASSCE. Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be required to sit special entrance examination papers in the two subjects.
All applicants are required to take the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination, which consists of a General Paper and an Aptitude Test. Applicants seeking admission into Education programmes will be required to take an additional paper in Education.

Applicants who pass all components of the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination will be ranked, and those who fall within the approved quota will be invited for an interview.
Professional Certificate and Tertiary Level Diploma Holders
The level of placement for applicants holding professional certificates or tertiary-level diplomas shall be determined through an assessment of their qualifications in relation to the programme applied for. The general guidelines are as follows:
- All professional certificate and tertiary-level diploma holders must possess credit passes in English Language and Mathematics at the G.C.E. “O” Level, or credit passes in English Language and Core Mathematics at the SSSCE/WASSCE level.
- Professional Certificate Holders: Placement shall be determined based on an assessment of the certificate by the relevant Faculty/School or Department.
- Holders of UCC (and affiliated institutions) Diplomas: A minimum of Second-Class Lower Division is required for admission into Level 200 or Level 300, subject to assessment.
- Holders of Diplomas from Other Tertiary Institutions: The relevant Faculty/School or Department shall assess the content of the diploma programme in relation to the intended programme of study on a case-by-case basis.
- HND Candidates: Placement shall depend on the level of alignment between the diploma content and the corresponding University of Cape Coast programme. Where there is a strong alignment, a minimum of Second-Class Upper Division is required for admission into Level 300. Where the alignment is insufficient, the applicant shall be admitted into Level 200.
