Senior High School graduates with backgrounds in Business, General Arts and Visual Arts, who desire to pursue engineering programmes at the tertiary level qualify to apply.
Admission Requirements
- WASSCE Applicants should have credit passes (A1 – C6) in two (2) electives and three (3) core subjects, i.e., English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
- SSSCE Applicants should have credit passes (A – D) in two (2) electives and three (3) core subjects, i.e., English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
Arts to Engineering (Pre-University) Programme cut off points at Umat for WASSCE with a minimum of credit score (C6) in core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies) plus any three passes in elective subjects (Business, General Arts, Visual Arts and Home Economics) with aggregate not exceeding 36.
The cut-off point for UMAT for WASSCE candidates is 36 and that of SSCE is 24. Candidates who score below the cut-off points will not be eligible for admission.
Arts to Engineering (Pre-University) Programme
The One-Year Pre-Engineering Certificate Programme at UMaT prepares non-science students with the fundamentals and the necessary STEM courses needed to undertake and excel in any undergraduate programme at this University. The Programme employs competency-based methodologies in training non-science students, thus, the curriculum has been uniquely designed such that the students experience the rich blend of theory and practically oriented teaching that UMaT offers. Also, to complement the academic work on campus, students are enrolled on various skill training programmes where they are trained and mentored by professionals and experts with diverse engineering backgrounds.
In the Pre-Engineering programme at UMaT, not only will you receive a strong foundation in engineering, but also benefit from the uniquely designed curriculum that emphasises critical thinking, problem-solving, entrepreneurial and valuable soft skills needed to create an enabling environment for rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and national transformation. As such, students have the privilege to undertake a range of challenging and specialised mathematics courses (algebra, calculus and differential equations) and science courses (chemistry, physics, computing and others), all taught by dedicated and practically oriented Staff. Students also have access to advanced equipment in our state-of-the-art laboratories for deepening their understanding of the taught courses.
After the successful completion of the programme, qualified students can apply to any of our undergraduate programmes of choice (at any UMaT Campus). These include:
Geomatic Engineering
Geological Engineering
Environmental and Safety Engineering
Mining Engineering
Minerals Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Mathematics
Computer Science and Engineering
Renewable Energy Engineering
Petroleum Engineering
Natural Gas Engineering
Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical Engineering
Petroleum Geosciences and Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Statistical Data Science
Land Administration and Information System
Economics and Industrial Organisation
Logistics and Transport Management
While at UMaT, a pre-engineering student should plan on taking at least four courses each semester. In addition, students must satisfy the requirements of the chosen undergraduate programme (NB: programme requirements may vary, details can be found on the programme’s website). All students must complete all mandatory and core courses, and at least one chosen elective in the second semester. Selection of elective courses will be done in consultation with the Coordinator.
