GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates Applicants
Additionally, GCE Ordinary Level Certificate applicants or its equivalent must have credits in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Moreover, GCE Advanced Level Certificate with passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is required.
Mature Applicants
Additionally, applicants should be at least 25 years of age. Furthermore, they should have a WASSCE/SSSCE or GCE O’ Level Certificate with credits in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and a Science subject, along with experience in the relevant area of study. Moreover, applicants must pass a written examination and/or an interview. Lastly, mature applicants must also possess birth certificates which are, at least, five (5) years old after the date of issue.
International Applicants
Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be considered for admission.
Specially Sponsored or Fee-paying Applicants
Additionally, applicants who satisfy the University’s minimum entry requirement of aggregate 36 but cannot meet the competitive departmental cut-off aggregate can apply for admission. However, this is only possible if they have sponsorship to cover their full fees.
Undergraduate – Diploma Programmes Entry Requirements
Admissions
Diploma in General Drilling (Fee paying Programme)
An applicant must satisfy any of the following:
Furthermore, the applicant must have a WASSCE Certificate with passes (A1-D7) in English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science. In addition, they must possess a minimum of C6 in the following subjects: Physics, Elective Mathematics, Chemistry or Metal Work or Technical Drawing or Applied Electricity or Applied Electronics.
SSSCE Certificate:
In addition, the student must have achieved six (6) passes (A-D) in all subjects. These subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Physics, Elective Mathematics, Chemistry, or Metal Work. Similarly, the student must have passed Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity, or Applied Electronics.
GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Certificates:
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level Certificate credits in five (5) subjects including English language, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics; or General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
City and Guilds
In addition, applicants must possess a City and Guilds of London Institute Part III Certificate or its equivalent in either Mechanical, Automobile, or Electrical Engineering. Moreover, holders of Certificate of Proficiency in General Drilling (one-year course) from University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa or a recognised institution are eligible.
Mature Applicants:
Additionally, applicants should be at least 25 years of age. Moreover, they should have an SSSCE/WASSCE or GCE O’ Level Certificate with credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and a science subject. Furthermore, experience in the relevant area of study is required. Finally, applicants must pass a written examination and/or an interview.
Mature applicants must also possess birth certificates which are, at least, five (5) years old after the date of issue.
International applicants: with equivalent certificates and grades are eligible.
Entry Requirements – Certificate Programmes (Weekends)
Admissions
Additionally, applicants with WASSCE Certificate Passes (A-E8) in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science. Likewise, applicants with SSSCE Certificate Passes (A-E) in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science. Moreover, applicants with Ordinary Level Certificate must have passes in five (5) subjects of GCE O Level including English Language, Mathematics, and Science.
Other Applicants
Candidates should be at least 20 years of age. Moreover, they should have any of the following qualifications: Diploma in Business Studies (DBS), Middle School Leaving Certificate (MSLC), National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI) Certificate, Technician Part I or II Certificate, Basic Education Certificate (BEC) or its equivalent. Furthermore, the candidate must pass an interview conducted at the Department.
Notification of Admission:
Once an applicant is selected by the University, an SMS (text) message is sent to the contact number the applicant provided during the application. Additionally, a list of selected candidates is pasted on the University website (https://portal.umat.edu.gh/apply/admission-list/search) for the information of the general public. Consequently, successful candidates are to log into their portal with the pin code and serial number they used for the application to print out their admission letters and other documents.
Fees payment and reporting to campus:
Successful candidates are to adhere to the deadline indicated in their admission letter for the payment of fees. Fresh students are to report at their halls of residence indicated in their admission on the day of reporting and comply with the directives for successful registration.
Arts to Engineering (Pre-University) Programme
The One-Year Pre-Engineering Certificate Programme at UMaT prepares non-science students with the fundamentals and the necessary STEM courses needed to undertake and excel in any undergraduate programme at this University. Moreover, the Programme employs competency-based methodologies in training non-science students; consequently, the curriculum has been uniquely designed such that the students experience the rich blend of theory and practically oriented teaching that UMaT offers. In addition, to complement the academic work on campus, students are enrolled on various skill training programmes. Here, they are trained and mentored by professionals and experts with diverse engineering backgrounds.
Exploring Interest
Moreover, the UMaT Pre-Engineering program emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial abilities. In addition, students use modern equipment in state-of-the-art laboratories and pursue specialized science and mathematics courses taught by committed faculty.

Curriculum
While at UMaT, a pre-engineering student should plan on taking at least four courses each semester. In addition, students must satisfy the requirements of the chosen undergraduate programme (NB: programme requirements may vary, details can be found on the programme’s website). All students must complete all mandatory and core courses, and at least one chosen elective in the second semester. Selection of elective courses will be done in consultation with the Coordinator.

Senior High School graduates with backgrounds in Business, General Arts and Visual Arts, who desire to pursue engineering programmes at the tertiary level qualify to apply.
Admission Requirements
- WASSCE Applicants should have credit passes (A1 – C6) in two (2) electives and three (3) core subjects, i.e., English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
- SSSCE Applicants should have credit passes (A – D) in two (2) electives and three (3) core subjects, i.e., English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
